Things to be kept in mind to increase your water heater’s lifespan

The geysers/water heaters that we have installed in our washrooms requires a check every now and then. Just like us, humans, all electrical devices need a routine check-up. Although electric water heaters are installed by professionals, but for the safety of ourselves and our family, it is crucial that we too take an active participation in knowing these devices. While geysers are safe and reliable, but there might be times when a mis-happening occurs. Things like, the unit not being installed properly, maintained or service can have its own share of downers. Therefore, for reasons like this, let us understand our water heaters better.

The best water heaters by its function, perform the task of heating water and bringing hot or warm water to the shower, washing machine or sinks. They use gas or electric power to heat up the water, which, due to its built-in chemistry, can cause damage to the parts of the heater. This damage in the long run can cause long-term problems like contamination, bulging, rupture or even explosion.

Listed below are a few issues which one might encounter while using a water heater:

1. Danger from carbon monoxide: Just like vehicles, the geysers powered by gas release carbon monoxide from time to time. However, the production of carbon monoxide is usually low and does not incur major damage. But, sometimes when the vents of a gas heater do not function properly, it exerts more carbon monoxide into the atmosphere which results in health effects on its inhabitants.

2. Bacterial contamination: The best water heaters too can be a vast depository of bacteria if not maintained, cleaned or kept in a suitable temperature. Especially for the tank-type heaters, warm and humid places are perfect for bacteria to develop and flourish. This contaminated water then gets passed on to showers and sinks, which when comes in direct contact with people can cause serious problems.

3. The issue of corrosion: The best water heaters in the market can also prove to be an easy target for corrosion damage. Corrosion is the reaction of iron and water in the presence of oxygen. Due to precautions like the sacrificial anode rod, water heaters rarely come across the problem of rust until towards the end of its service life. However, if the anode rod happens to rust, the water heater may begin to rust. If this happens, it would need immediate repairing, otherwise the tank might have to be replaced completely. However, with regular maintenance, such situations can be tackled out, thereby preventing corrosion from starting.
